Be Healthy 4 Life Presentation

Be Healthy 4 Life is a focused concept presentation that I developed to be a minimalist version of an earlier presentation, “How to Live a Healthy Life” for the SlideShare Best Presentation Contest that runs through early September.

The presentation has gotten a lot of views and downloads, but not a lot of votes for the contest.

This presentation was developed as a patient and student education resource for younger students, high school students, college students and adult patients. In the presentation the common steps that people should follow to life a healthy life are included.

Using Humor and YouTube to Educate about Plagiarism

Plagiarism or misrepresenting someone else’s work as your own is generally not an amusing topic.

These three YouTube clips demonstrate how using a bit of humor along with a video recording can produce some amusing results that are also educational. Because of plagiarism issues in the online course, I have had to change the instruction on Plagiarism and Academic Integrity.

The first two of these videos will be used in the “Copy and Paste Generation: Promoting Academic Integrity and Preventing Plagiarism” presentation for the Online Teaching Conference at Cabrillo College this June in Aptos.

I included the third one because it was so funny.

Plagiarism – Don’t Do It

The Plagiarism – Don’t Do It video was modeled after identity theft videos.

Plagiarism – Identity Theft Spoof

The Plagiarism – Identity Theft Spoof is another parody of the Idenity Theft Commercials. This was done by the Kealakehe High School. There is an extended version as well.

Before He Cheats – A Teacher Parody

Before He Cheats – A Teacher Parody

A parody of Carrie Underwood’s video “Before He Cheats” from a teacher’s perspective dealing with a cheating student in her school. This Lyrics & Video production comes from Jim McKenzie with music performed by Kristen Huish. You can access the lyrics on the YouTube Site.

Living with Loss eBook – Improving Wellness

Living with Loss eBookWhile not normally a Nutrition topic, the eBook Living with Loss is a wellness topic. This eBook is a good resource for improving or maintaining wellness in the face of a loss, a death or a significant life changing event.

The Living with Loss By Understanding Grief eBook is a complementary resource that I helped write, design, create and get published as part of the Tuolumne County Working Group for Loss & Grief Education and Support.

The booklet was written by Dr. Dyer in 2008 with input from Working Group Members which included a cross section of those interested in Grief and Loss within Tuolumne County.

Download a copy of the eBook by clicking on the eBook image at the left or on the image in the right side bar.

You can find out more about the Living with Loss eBook and even view a smaller version of it on the Grief, Loss and Bereavement Blog.

Coming to you through your Computer: Your Online Lectures

Just a reminder about the online lectures for the course.

You can find them in the right hand side bar under “Additional Online Links” or by following this link, Lecture Links Recorded Lectures.

All of the lectures for the course have been archived through CCC Confer so you can get them through your computer.

Here is a rather amusing comment from one of the online students this semester about using the Virtual Lectures:

“I just wanted to say I love the virtual lectures.

I have never had an on-line class with narrated power point lectures, its just like being in class. My daughter enjoyed it, too. She thought it was neat that my instructor was inside the computer. In fact, when I went to close my laptop she yelled, “No, Mommy! Don’t close that! Your teacher is in there!” (She tends to take things very literally) I am really looking forward to the semester. Thanks again.

Tyra Banks Retort on “Fat” Comments

Tyra addresses rather effectively the unflattering bathing suit photos that were plastered across every tabloid and gossip website in 2007, claiming that she had gained 40 lbs.

In calculating Tyra’s BMI, at 5′10″ and 161 lbs, she ends up right in the healthy range with a BMI of 23.1

You can read an interview with her at People Magazine online.

Calculating BMI (Body Mass Index)

BMI Formula BMI = [ Weight in Pounds / ( Height in inches ) x ( Height in inches ) ] x 703

BMI = ( kg/m² )
(weight in pounds * 703 )
height in inches²

Metric BMI Formula

BMI = [ Weight in Kilograms / ( Height in Meters ) x ( Height in Meters ) ]

BMI = ( kg/m² )
weight in kilograms
height in meters²

How to Raise a Healthy Child

Jumping the WavesThere is so much in the news about the increasing rates childhood obesity and preventing childhood obesity. Raising a Healthy Child may be one of the greatest challenges that parents and caregivers face.

The best way to prevent childhood obesity is pretty simple, you focus on two health promoting habits.

  • Teach children how to make healthy, nutritious food choices.
  • Teach children how to be active each day.

Teaching children how to make good healthy food choices, how to be active every day involving others and making it fun is giving them a GIFT to last a lifetime.

Give Your Child the GIFT of Health
Remember that raising a healthy child or healthy children can be simple when you focus on giving your child the GIFT of Health.

  • Good Nutrition
  • Involving Others
  • Fitness & Fun
  • Teaching Health Choices

Read more about the GIFT of Health at the How to Raise a Healthy Child article.

We’re All Winners

This lecture was developed to help explain We’re All Winners, an educational activity, a day created to build self esteem, promote healthy eating and encourage children to be physically active.

We’re All Winners

I'm a Winner“We’re All Winners” is an educational fitness activity designed to let young children have fun, learn a bit about being safe in the sun and then participate in a non-racing, solo running activity.

The main goal of the event is to create an environment in which each child gets to feel special, like a winner and goes home feeling and believing for at least one day that “I’m a Winner!” This is the message that we want them to internalize and to believe.

This educational activity an idea that I developed while my young daughters were in pre-school. We staged for five years in the pre-school or kindergarten setting and last year also put on a modified version for my older daughter’s first grade setting.

Thanks to Docstoc, you can watch the lecture online. Simply click on the arrow to start the presentation:
